The scent of aged wood and something akin to dried flowers, yet sharper, more earthy, tickled Brittany’s nose. It was a smell that clung to the air, a perfume of forgotten times. She and Leo had followed the winding cobblestone path, a ribbon of grey unfurling between ancient buildings, until it deposited them in a small, sun-dappled courtyard. Here, nestled between a baker who always smelled of warm bread and a tailor whose shop hummed with the rhythmic whir of sewing machines, was a doorway that seemed to exhale quietude.
The sign above it, barely legible, was carved into the wood with a delicate, almost hesitant hand. It read: "Elara’s Handcrafted Wonders." Brittany’s heart gave a little leap. This was it. The address whispered by the old woman at the market, the one who had pointed them in this direction with a knowing twinkle in her eye.
“Are you sure this is it, Leo?” Brittany asked, her voice a soft murmur. The air here felt different, hushed, as if holding its breath.
