Elias traced the embossed lines of the ledger with a fingertip, the worn leather cool beneath his touch. He’d spent another sleepless night poring over its pages, the cryptic symbols and meticulously penned figures swimming before his eyes. Each entry was a breadcrumb, leading him deeper into a labyrinth of financial history that felt both ancient and chillingly current. He’d confided in no one, the weight of his discovery pressing down on him like a physical burden. But the gnawing uncertainty, the desperate need for a sounding board, had finally pushed him to a decision. Isabella Vance. She was a puzzle box wrapped in an enigma, her sharp intellect and unnerving composure a constant source of fascination and apprehension. If anyone could decipher the subtle currents of this clandestine world, it was her.

He arranged to meet her at a quiet café, a place deliberately chosen for its anonymity. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The aroma of roasted coffee beans hung heavy, a comforting scent that did little to soothe the tremor in Elias’s hands. Isabella arrived precisely on time, a vision in a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail. Her eyes, the colour of stormy seas, surveyed him with an unreadable expression.

“Elias,” she greeted, her voice a low, melodic hum. She slid into the chair opposite him, her movements economical and precise. “You seemed to have something important to discuss.”
