Campfires crackled with a familiar warmth, stories were rehashed with a comfortable nostalgia, and the lake, a constant companion, seemed to reflect the fading sunlight with a knowing shimmer. For Tucker, this final stretch was a strange, bittersweet blend of relief and a pang of something akin to sadness.

He found himself lingering by the waterfront, watching the smaller waves lap against the shore, each one a tiny echo of the larger tides that had swept through his own life this summer. Autumn, as always, was a calming presence. She found him there, sketching in his notebook, the charcoal smudges on his fingers a testament to his renewed engagement with the world. Instead, she simply sat beside him, her dark hair a soft curtain against her cheek, and pointed out the way the light caught the iridescent wings of a dragonfly hovering near the reeds.
