The Teacher's Scrutiny
Evan's history teacher, recognizing his hidden intelligence, begins to test him. The teacher deliberately tries to provoke Evan, seeking to expose his true capabilities and perhaps break him.
The air in Professor Albright’s history lecture hall was thick with the scent of old paper and polished wood, a perfume of academia that usually soothed me. Today, however, it felt heavy, suffocating. Albright himself stood at the front of the room, a man carved from granite, his eyes like chips of flint that seemed to bore through the carefully constructed facade of my ignorance. He’d been watching me since the first day, his gaze a constant, subtle pressure against the walls I’d built.
“And so,” Albright’s voice boomed, resonating in the cavernous room, “we see the inevitable decline of empires built on avarice and moral rot. A cautionary tale, wouldn’t you agree?” He paused, his gaze sweeping across the rows of students, lingering for a fraction of a second too long on me. “Or perhaps,” he continued, his tone shifting, becoming almost conversational, “some would argue that such decline is merely a prelude to a new, more robust order. That the strong, the adaptable, the… *clever*… will always find a way to rise from the ashes.”
He was talking about me. I knew it with a certainty that settled like ice in my gut. He saw the cracks, the inconsistencies in my performance. My carefully cultivated air of dumb jock, the feigned confusion, the occasional outburst of barely-controlled aggression—it was all a show. And Albright, it seemed, was one of the few people in this entire gilded institution who was actually watching the play.
