The air in the lecture hall was thick with the scent of old paper, expensive cologne, and the barely suppressed hum of adolescent anxiety. Professor Thorne, a man whose tweed jacket seemed perpetually dusted with chalk and whose eyes held the sharp, knowing glint of a predator, paced the front of the room. His voice, a low rumble that somehow commanded absolute attention, echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings of Argentum College's oldest lecture hall.
"The Peloponnesian War," Thorne began, his gaze sweeping across the sea of faces, lingering for a fraction of a second too long on mine, "was not merely a conflict between two city-states. It was a clash of ideologies, a testament to the inherent flaws in human ambition, and a stark reminder that even the most powerful empires can crumble from within."
I’d read the assigned chapters twice.
