Pala, perched on the edge of her bed, watched dust motes dance in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the drawn curtains. Her aunt’s voice, a gentle murmur from downstairs, floated up, a fragile melody against the usual cacophony of her home. It was an offer, a lifeline thrown into the churning waters of her despair: a summer visit. A chance to breathe, to escape the suffocating presence of *him*, to perhaps, just perhaps, feel like herself again.

A summer visit. The words echoed in the quiet of her room, a stark contrast to the accusations that had been hurled at her just moments before. Her aunt was talking to her mother. Pala had been upstairs, a silent, invisible observer, the floorboards creaking beneath her restless pacing as the conversation drifted up, each word a shard of glass embedding itself deeper into her raw heart.

“She’s telling me… it’s her fault,” her mother’s voice, sharp and brittle, laced with an accusation that had become all too familiar. “She’s the one… telling him… to do it.”
