The chill that settled over Jardine wasn't born of the biting autumn wind whipping through the skeletal branches of the city park. It was an internal frost, a prickling dread that snaked its way up her spine, making the hairs on her arms stand at attention. She’d been walking, Elias a few paces ahead, his gait measured and deliberate, when the feeling struck. It was like a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure, a silent alarm blaring in the depths of her being.
Elias stopped, his hand instinctively reaching out to steady her. "Jardine? Are you alright?" His voice, usually a calm anchor, held a note of concern that mirrored her own unease.
She shook her head, her gaze sweeping the park, searching for the source of the disquiet. The usual ebb and flow of people – dog walkers, hurried commuters, children chasing pigeons – seemed to blur, their mundane activities suddenly rendered insignificant against the weight of her burgeoning apprehension. "I don't know," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustling leaves. "It's like… like someone is watching. Not just watching, but *knowing*."
