The air in the abandoned observatory hung thick with the dust of forgotten stars and the acrid tang of betrayal. Jardine stood amidst the skeletal remains of a telescope, its rusted joints groaning in the faint breeze that snaked through shattered panes. Before her, illuminated by the slivers of moonlight piercing the gloom, stood Mara. The woman Jardine had once considered her closest confidante, the one who had navigated the labyrinth of their shared discoveries with a steady hand, now looked like a stranger.

"Mara," Jardine's voice was a low, raw sound, scraped raw by the revelation that had landed like a physical blow. "Why?"

Mara’s eyes, usually so warm and inviting, were now hard, reflecting the broken shards of glass scattered at their feet. A flicker of something – regret? fear? – danced in their depths before being swiftly masked. "You don't understand, Jardine. You can't possibly comprehend the forces at play."
