The air in the cramped, dusty attic was thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten dreams. Moonlight, strained through a grimy windowpane, cast long, skeletal shadows across stacks of discarded furniture and the silent hum of a world outside that felt a million miles away. Jardine’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of fear and a desperate, burgeoning hope. Elias Thorne, his usually stoic face etched with a weariness that went bone-deep, sat across from her on an overturned crate, his gaze fixed on the flickering candle between them. The silence had stretched, taut and heavy, since their narrow escape from the shadowed figures that had hunted them through the city’s labyrinthine alleys.
“They know,” Jardine whispered, her voice raw, the words catching in her throat. “They know about the artifact. They know about me.”
Elias nodded, his eyes, pools of ancient wisdom and unshed sorrow, met hers. “They have for a long time, Jardine. Longer than you can possibly imagine.” He picked up a loose thread from his worn tweed jacket, his fingers tracing its frayed length with a deliberate slowness. “You asked me about my past, abouit why I’ve been so insistent on… on protecting you. The truth is, our paths have been intertwined for far longer than our recent meeting suggests.”
