The scent of old paper and dried ink always soothed Jardine, a familiar balm against the disquiet that had settled in her bones. Mara’s small apartment, tucked away in a quieter, older part of the city, was a sanctuary of sorts. Books were stacked precariously high, spilling from shelves onto worn armchairs, and the air hummed with a quiet contentment that Jardine desperately craved. Mara, her oldest friend, was a constant in the swirling chaos of her life.

“Another late night, huh?” Mara’s voice, warm and laced with concern, cut through Jardine’s thoughts. She was perched on a stool by a cluttered desk, a mug of steaming tea cradled in her hands. Her eyes, usually bright and full of laughter, held a sympathetic glint.

Jardine offered a weak smile, sinking onto the edge of a plush, overstuffed sofa. “You know how it is. The research never stops.” She gestured vaguely at the scattered notes and printouts surrounding her, a desperate attempt to appear focused, to push away the unsettling images that had flickered behind her eyelids all day. A fleeting vision of a woman with eyes like hers, but filled with a fierce, ancient power, had haunted her during her morning commute. Then, a whisper, not in her ears, but in the very marrow of her bones: *“The threads are thin, child. Be wary of the weave.”*
