The air in Old Man Fitzwilliam’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and dried herbs, a comforting aroma that always made Hunter feel a little more settled. Sunlight, filtered through a windowpane etched with years of dust and rain, cast dancing motes across the worn leather of the armchair where Hunter and Wagera sat. Across from them, perched on the edge of a cluttered desk, was Fitzwilliam himself, his eyes, usually twinkling with a gentle amusement, now held a serious, almost weary gaze.

“You understand,” Fitzwilliam began, his voice a low rumble, “that what you’ve uncovered is not merely an old trinket. It is the heart of this town, the very reason it exists.” He steepled his fingers, the skin on his knuckles like parchment. “And its guardian… well, that role has been passed down through generations. A trust, you might say.”

Hunter nodded, his gaze fixed on the old man. He felt a pang of a familiar nervousness, the kind that always accompanied the precipice of a new discovery, but it was tempered by a deep-seated respect. “We know, Mr. Fitzwilliam. That’s why we came to you. We… we think the guardian might be someone we know, or at least, someone who lives here.”
