Fitzwilliam explains that a mysterious guardian, fearing the artifact would be lost or stolen, created the illusion device. Their intent was protection, not malice, though their methods were extreme.
Old Man Fitzwilliam’s voice, a dry rustle like autumn leaves skittering across cobblestones, held a note of weariness that seemed to settle in the very air of his cluttered study. Hunter and Wagera sat opposite him, the afternoon sun slanting through the dusty windowpanes, illuminating motes of forgotten time dancing around them. The artifact, a tarnished silver locket pulsing with a faint, inner light, rested on a velvet cushion between them, a silent testament to their recent adventure.
“The ‘shadow’,” Fitzwilliam began, his gnarled fingers tracing the intricate carvings on the locket, “was not born of malice, but of fear. A fear, I might add, that was not entirely unfounded.” He paused, his gaze drifting towards the window, as if seeing something far beyond the familiar rooftops of Oakhaven.
Hunter leaned forward, his curiosity a palpable force. “Fear of what, Mr. Fitzwilliam? And who created the shadow?”
