Chapter 9: A Glitch in the System

The air in the Evergreen Toy Co. workshop, usually thick with the scent of sawdust and a faint, sweet aroma of paint, now carried a new, acrid tang of desperation. Claire, perched precariously on a stool, scribbled furiously in her notebook, her brow furrowed deeper than a well-worn groove on a record. Beside her, Ben wrung his hands, his usual cheerful demeanor replaced by a grim pallor. The rhythmic whirring and clanking that had been the factory’s heart and soul had abruptly ceased, replaced by an unnerving silence that felt louder than any explosion.

The culprit, a hulking, antiquated contraption affectionately, and now ironically, known as “The Merry-Go-Round Machine,” stood silent and defeated in the center of the workshop. Its once gleaming brass gears were now coated in a greasy film, and a ominous plume of smoke, the source of the acrid smell, curled lazily from its innards. It was the machine responsible for the intricate, interlocking parts of their best-selling toy, the “Wobble-Bot.” Without it, the entire Christmas production line was dead in the water.
