The Mayor's Plea

Mayor Higgins wrung his hands like a damp dishcloth. His tie, a garish shade of holly green, was already askew, and his brow was furrowed into a landscape of worry lines. He perched on the edge of Claire’s temporarily commandeered desk at the Evergreen Toy Co. factory, a stark contrast to her own meticulously organized workspace back in the city. This factory, with its scent of sawdust and something vaguely like gingerbread, felt a million miles away from the sterile efficiency of Sterling Acquisitions.

“Ms. Sterling,” he began, his voice a reedy tenor that quivered with anxiety, “I… I know you’re here to do a job. A very important job, I’m sure. Efficiency is… well, it’s the backbone of progress, isn’t it?” He offered a weak, hopeful smile that Claire didn’t return. She merely adjusted the stack of inventory reports, her gaze sharp and unyielding.

“My job, Mayor, is to assess the viability of Evergreen Toy Co. and present the most logical, cost-effective solution. Sentimentality is not a line item in my ledger.”
