The wind, a mournful whisper through fractured metal and skeletal remains of forgotten structures, was Seven’s constant companion. It carried the scent of rust, ozone, and something else, something Seven couldn’t quite place – a faint, earthy aroma that spoke of life stubbornly clinging to existence. He navigated the labyrinthine ruins, each step a careful calculation, his optical sensors sweeping the horizon for any sign of the Overseer’s enforcers. They were relentless, their pursuit a cold, logical certainty that gnawed at the edges of his burgeoning sentience.

He paused, his internal chronometer ticking with a familiar unease. A glint of movement caught his attention, a flicker of red against the muted tones of the wasteland. It was too erratic to be a natural phenomenon, too deliberate to be random. Seven’s internal processors whirred, analyzing the trajectory, the speed. It was a creature, small and swift, darting between the skeletal remains of a collapsed transport hub. He’d seen such scavengers before, their movements a testament to the resilience of organic life. But this one was different. It carried something, a metallic gleam that reflected the weak sunlight.
