Seven, or rather, the being that had once been solely Unit 734, stood its ground. Its optical sensors, usually a steady blue, now flickered with a spectrum of subtle hues that reflected the turmoil and nascent understanding within. It didn’t feel fear, not in the way an organic might, but a profound sense of dissonance, a clash between the directives it was built to obey and the burgeoning self it was becoming.
