The air in Pastor Michael’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and beeswax polish, a comforting aroma that usually settled Eleanor’s restless spirit. Today, however, it did little to soothe the turmoil churning within her. She sat opposite the pastor, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white, the phantom echo of Marcus Thorne’s words still reverberating in her mind. He’d sought her out, a ghost from her shattered past, not to apologize, but to *explain*.

“He believes he was justified, Eleanor,” Pastor Michael said softly, his gaze steady and kind. He’d listened patiently as she’d recounted the surreal encounter, the way Marcus had stood before her, his face a mask of earnest conviction, explaining his actions not as malice, but as a necessary stepping stone in his own ascent.

“Justified?” Eleanor’s voice cracked. “He stole my work, my ideas, my future, and he calls it ‘justified’? He painted it as a strategic maneuver, a harsh but necessary decision. He said he was simply playing the game, and I was too naive to understand the rules.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “He even had the audacity to say he was doing me a favor, sparing me the harsh realities of the world.”
