The air in the Black Cat was thick enough to chew, a heady cocktail of stale beer, sweat, and the electric hum of anticipation. Leo, perched behind his battered turntables, felt it thrumming beneath his fingertips, a familiar tremor that usually ignited a spark. Tonight, though, the spark felt…dim. He’d been spinning for an hour, weaving through a tapestry of deep house and breakbeats, but the crowd’s energy felt muted, a polite ripple instead of a tidal wave. He glanced at the clock, a neon red eye blinking in the gloom. Almost midnight. His slot was ending, and the main act, DJ Apex, was due to take over.

Apex. Even the name felt like a challenge. Leo had heard whispers about him, seen his name scrawled on flyers plastered across the city’s grittier districts. Apex was a legend, a ghost of the underground, renowned for his ruthless technical skill and his ability to command any dance floor. Leo admired him, in a way. Apex was everything Leo wasn’t – confident, established, a master of his craft. And tonight, Apex was here, in Leo’s usual haunt, about to eclipse him.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Leo’s stomach. He’d poured his heart into this set, trying to find that elusive connection, that perfect rhythm that would make the room ignite. But tonight, it felt like he was speaking a language no one understood, his carefully curated beats falling flat against the wall of indifference. He fumbled with a crossfader, a scratch that was too sharp, too jarring. A few heads turned, but no one really reacted. He felt a flush creep up his neck.
