The air in Professor Armitage’s study was thick with the scent of aging paper and something else, something vaguely metallic, like old pennies or dried blood. Elara hadn’t noticed it before, not really, not with the same sharp clarity that had settled upon her since leaving the hushed, dusty aisles of the archive yesterday. Now, the scent seemed to cling to the very books that lined the walls, to the worn leather of the armchair where she sat, and to the Professor himself, who was pouring them both tea with a hand that trembled just a fraction.

“You are sure about this, Elara?” His voice was softer than usual, a low rumble that barely disturbed the quiet. His eyes, usually twinkling with academic curiosity, were shadowed with a weariness that went beyond late nights spent deciphering ancient texts.

Elara nodded, her gaze fixed on the swirling amber liquid in her teacup. “I have to be. The archive… it confirmed so much of what I’ve been feeling. The gaps, the inconsistencies… they aren’t just in my memory, Professor. They’re in the records too.”
