The scent of freshly baked cookies, a comforting aroma that usually clung to the Miller household, seemed to be struggling to break through the tension that had settled over the Davis home. Alex Davis, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy or sullen silence, sat at the kitchen table, his small hands tracing the wood grain. The usual clamor of his parents’ hushed, anxious voices was absent, replaced by a fragile quiet. Mrs. Davis, her shoulders still carrying the weight of weeks of worry, watched him with a mixture of apprehension and a dawning, fragile hope. Mr. Davis stood by the window, his gaze fixed on the street, though his mind was clearly elsewhere.
“Alex,” Mrs. Davis began, her voice softer than usual, a tentative melody in the quiet room. “Would you like to tell us about… about what happened at school today?”
Alex’s head snapped up, his eyes wide, a flicker of the old fear surfacing. He’d grown accustomed to the immediate interrogation, the sharp questions that felt like accusations. But this time, there was no edge to his mother’s tone, no accusatory undertone. He hesitated, his gaze darting between his parents, searching for the trap, the hidden judgment.
