Tonight, it was finally accepted. Mrs. Davis, smoothing down her dress with a nervous flutter, held her son Alex’s hand a little too tightly. Alex, usually a bundle of restless energy, walked with a peculiar stillness, his eyes darting between the brightly lit windows of the Miller home and the familiar, yet somehow less welcoming, facade of his own.

Inside, the Miller house hummed with a gentle, joyful chaos. Emily, a whirlwind of bright ribbons and even brighter smiles, was setting out placemats with Tom, her younger brother, who was meticulously arranging the napkins, his brow furrowed in concentration. Sarah Miller, her apron dusted with flour, laughed as Mark Miller recounted a particularly humorous anecdote from his day, his voice a deep, grounding rumble. The air was thick with the comforting aroma of their shared meal, but more than that, it was alive with an palpable sense of ease, of belonging.

As the doorbell chimed, Sarah’s smile widened. She met Mrs. Davis at the door, her gaze warm and open. “Welcome, Eleanor! So glad you could make it. Come in, come in!”
