Chapter 4
Shadows of the Past
Their meetings by the lighthouse become a ritual. Yanis remains elusive, his past shrouded in mystery. Aïcha finds herself falling for him, yet his guarded nature fuels her curiosity and a growing unease.
The salty air, thick with the lingering scent of brine and damp earth, had become Aïcha’s perfume. Each evening, as the sun bled its final hues across the horizon, she found herself drawn to the sentinel of stone that guarded the rugged coastline. The old lighthouse, its whitewashed facade now weathered and scarred by countless storms, stood as a silent witness to the ebb and flow of tides and time. Locals spoke of spectral lights, of a phantom glow that sometimes flickered at its summit, a tale Aïcha had always dismissed as the fanciful ramblings of a village steeped in superstition. Yet, tonight, the mist that coiled around the tower lent an ethereal quality to the familiar silhouette, blurring the edges of reality and inviting a sense of wonder.
She walked with a practiced ease, her footsteps crunching softly on the gravel path leading to the lighthouse’s base. The air was heavy, pregnant with an unspoken anticipation. It was on one such evening, cloaked in the swirling tendrils of fog that muffled the world, that she first saw him. He stood at the edge of the cliff, a solitary figure against the vast, slate-grey expanse of the sea. His dark coat, the color of a moonless night, seemed to absorb the scant light, rendering him a silhouette against the encroaching twilight. He was utterly still, facing the ocean as if in a silent communion.
Intrigue, a familiar companion on these solitary walks, tugged at Aïcha. She hesitated for a moment, the inherent mystery of the man drawing her closer, yet a flicker of caution held her back. Then, emboldened by the cloaking mist and the sheer magnetism of his stillness, she moved forward. Her voice, when it finally emerged, was barely a whisper, swallowed by the sigh of the wind.
