The air crackled, not with the usual hum of the old forest but with a raw, untamed energy that prickled Elara’s skin. She stumbled backward, her breath catching in her throat as the two figures emerged from the dense undergrowth, cloaked and menacing. Commander Valerius stood a step ahead, his eyes, sharp and assessing, fixed on her with an unnerving intensity. Beside him, the other man, broader and less refined, held a crude, heavy weapon. This was no longer a game of evasion; this was a cornering.
Panic, cold and sharp, began to claw at her. She had been so careful, so mindful of every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig. Lyra's warnings about the relentless nature of Valerius's pursuit echoed in her mind, but even Lyra, with all her street wisdom, hadn't painted a picture this dire. Elara’s fingers tightened around the worn leather of her satchel, the artifact nestled within a cold, inert weight against her hip. It was supposed to be her guide, her key, but in this moment, it felt like a lead weight, anchoring her to a fate she couldn't escape.
"You've led us on quite a chase, Elara," Valerius’s voice was smooth, almost conversational, a stark contrast to the predatory glint in his eyes. "But all journeys come to an end."
