The air in the cramped train carriage vibrated with a low hum, a counterpoint to the frantic thumping of Elara’s heart. Outside, the landscape blurred into an indistinct wash of greens and browns, each passing tree a fleeting sentinel in her desperate flight. She clutched the worn leather satchel to her chest, its contents – the locket, the fragmented journal pages, the peculiar obsidian shard – a tangible weight against the gnawing uncertainty that had become her constant companion.
It had been two days since the incident at the antique shop, two days of feverish travel, of changing trains at anonymous junctions, of sleeping in the kind of sterile, impersonal rooms that offered no solace, only a brief respite from the pursuing shadows. The feeling of being watched, once a phantom prickle on her skin, had solidified into a chilling certainty. They were close. She could feel it, a cold dread that coiled in her stomach and tightened her throat.
Commander Valerius. The name had surfaced from the hushed whispers of the shopkeeper, a phantom spoken with a mixture of fear and reverence.
