The air in the attic was thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten dreams, a perfume only dust could conjure. Elara, armed with a flickering flashlight and a heart thrumming with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity, pushed aside a draped sheet that billowed like a ghost in the dim light. Cobwebs clung to her hair like delicate, unwanted jewelry. She’d come up here seeking… something. Solace, perhaps, from the persistent hum of unease that had settled in her bones, or maybe just a distraction from the confusing jumble of her own thoughts. The house, usually a comforting presence, felt strangely distant, as if holding its breath, waiting.

Beneath the sheet, a trunk lay squat and sturdy, its brass latches tarnished with the patina of years. Elara knelt, her knees protesting against the rough wooden floorboards. With a sigh, she worked at the latches, the metal groaning in protest until, with a final click, they sprang open. Inside, a jumble of items lay nestled in faded velvet: brittle photographs, a child’s wooden toy horse with one eye missing, a scattering of yellowed letters tied with a faded ribbon.
