Shadows in the Mist
The mist, a familiar shroud to the coastal town, had always felt like a soft blanket, muffling the world and lending a certain peace to Elara’s days. Today, however, it felt different. It clung to the cobblestone streets with a damp chill that seeped into her bones, a stark contrast to the warmth that had begun to bloom in her chest since the stranger, Kael, had arrived. He had spoken of a life she couldn't grasp, of a name that felt both alien and achingly familiar, and his words had stirred a restless current beneath the quiet surface of her existence.
She walked along the harbour, the salty air doing little to clear the fog in her mind. The fishing boats, usually bobbing with cheerful familiarity, seemed distant, their masts disappearing into the grey. The cries of the gulls were muted, as if even they were holding their breath. A shiver traced its way down her spine, not entirely from the cold. It was the feeling that something was different, that the familiar world was shifting, like sand beneath her feet.
She remembered Kael’s eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, filled with a knowledge that both frightened and compelled her. He had spoken of emeralds, of a power that pulsed within her, a power she had never known. Elara touched the smooth, cool stone of her pendant, a simple piece of sea glass she’d found years ago. It felt strangely warm against her skin today. Was this the glimmer he had spoken of?
