Submerged in the ocean's embrace, Elara discovers she can breathe. The mermaid guides her through a breathtaking dance, their laughter echoing in the silent blue.
The water embraced Elara like a lover’s arms, cool and insistent, pulling her down, down, down. She closed her eyes, a strange, almost peaceful surrender settling over her. The last vestiges of the sun’s warmth clung to her skin, a fading memory as the oceanic pressure deepened. She braced herself for the inevitable burning in her lungs, the desperate gasp that would never come, the panicked thrashing that would signal the end. But it didn’t.
Instead, a soft, silken sensation filled her chest, a gentle expansion, a slow, steady intake. It was like breathing air, yet entirely, impossibly different. It was the breath of the deep, a gift she hadn’t asked for, a magic she hadn’t understood. Her eyes fluttered open, and the world that greeted her stole her breath, if such a thing were possible.
She was suspended in a liquid sky, a kaleidoscope of blues and greens swirling around her. Sunlight, fractured and diffused, painted shimmering patterns on the sandy floor far below. Schools of fish, like living jewels, darted past, their scales catching the light in fleeting rainbows. The silence was profound, not an empty void, but a rich, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through her very bones. And beside her, a creature of dreams, swam Serena.
