The scent of pine and damp earth clung to Laiba’s coat as she stepped out of her sputtering car, the engine sighing with a final, wheezing gasp before falling silent. Oakhaven. The name itself sounded like a hushed secret, a place where sunlight struggled to penetrate the dense canopy of ancient oaks that ringed the town. She’d seen the reports, of course – a string of unfortunate accidents, a few unsettling disappearances, all chalked up to the treacherous terrain and the isolation of the region. But Laiba’s gut, a finely tuned instrument honed by years of chasing stories, told her there was more. Much more.

Her camera, a heavy, professional model, felt reassuringly solid in her hands. She’d learned to trust its lens more than the words of most people. It captured the truths that were too shy to speak, the shadows that lingered just beyond the periphery of vision. As she began to walk towards the town’s sparse cluster of buildings, the trees seemed to press in, their gnarled branches like skeletal fingers reaching out. A chill, independent of the autumn air, traced its way down her spine.

The general store was the heart of Oakhaven, a small, cluttered space smelling of kerosene, dried herbs, and something vaguely metallic, like old blood. Old Mrs. Gable, her face a roadmap of wrinkles, watched Laiba from behind a counter piled high with canned goods. Her eyes, a faded blue, held a weary resignation.
