The intricate, looping patterns he’d drawn, once dismissed as mere doodles, now formed a chilling Rosetta Stone, matching symbols he’d found etched into the bark of ancient trees, scrawled onto the walls of abandoned barns, and, most disturbingly, discovered near the sites of the disappearances. They pulsed with a malevolent energy, a silent testament to a darkness far older than this town.

“Anything, Bilal?” Eva’s voice, sharp and laced with impatience, crackled through his earpiece. His former mentor, a woman who navigated the world with the unwavering logic of a seasoned detective, remained a difficult ally. She saw patterns where he saw a malevolent design, isolated incidents where he saw a single, terrifying conductor.
