Chapter 12
A Desperate Plea
Bilal receives an anonymous tip, leading him to a hidden location. He finds evidence suggesting the disappearances are ritualistic sacrifices.
The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast a sickly green glow onto the rain-slicked street, each droplet reflecting the neon's distorted pulse. Bilal hunched deeper into his worn leather jacket, the collar turned up against the persistent drizzle that seemed to mirror the weariness in his soul. The anonymity of the late hour was a balm, a temporary reprieve from the relentless hum of the city and the louder, more intrusive hum of his own unresolved cases. He nursed a lukewarm coffee, the bitter taste a familiar companion, and stared out at the empty street, waiting.
The crumpled note had arrived that afternoon, slipped under his office door with the stealth of a phantom. No return address, no sender – just a hastily scrawled address and a single, chilling sentence: "They are not gone. They are taken. Look where the old roots drink deep." The ‘they’ was what had snagged him, a hook pulling him out of the mire of his current, frustratingly mundane assignments and back into the gnawing suspicion that the recent string of disappearances, all dismissed by Captain Rostova as isolated incidents, were anything but. The ‘old roots’… that was the part that echoed with a disturbing resonance, a whisper from the forgotten corners of his memory, a whisper that tasted of damp earth and ancient rituals.
A beat-up sedan, its headlights cutting weak paths through the gloom, pulled up across the street. The engine idled, a low rumble that vibrated through the damp asphalt. Bilal’s hand instinctively tightened around the worn grip of the pistol tucked beneath his jacket. He didn’t expect a welcoming committee, and this late, in this part of town, caution was a more valuable commodity than politeness.
