The Collector's Game

Detective Corbin suspects Ali, but the artist's disturbing paintings offer cryptic warnings rather than confessions.

Detective Corbin’s knuckles were white as he gripped the chipped ceramic mug, the lukewarm coffee doing little to soothe the gnawing unease in his gut. He stared at the canvases scattered across Ali’s studio, each one a vortex of charcoal and oil, a testament to a mind teetering on the precipice. The air in the cluttered space was thick with the scent of turpentine and something else… something metallic, like old blood. Ali, a wraith in faded denim and a paint-splattered shirt, sat hunched on a stool, his gaze fixed on a half-finished piece, his silence a heavy cloak.

“You expect me to believe this is just… art?” Corbin’s voice was a low growl, echoing in the cavernous room. He gestured with the mug towards a canvas depicting a tangled knot of skeletal figures, their faces contorted in silent screams. “These aren’t nightmares, Ali. These are premonitions. These are maps.”

Ali finally stirred, his movements slow, deliberate. He ran a hand through his unkempt dark hair, his eyes, dark and unnervingly deep, met Corbin’s for a fleeting moment. “They are what I see, Detective. What I feel.” His voice was a low murmur, raspy, as if he hadn’t spoken in days.
