A Changed Perspective
Returning to school, Lily sees her familiar world with new eyes. Her art class takes on a deeper significance, her drawings now filled with a newfound respect.
The familiar scent of chalk dust and drying tempera paint greeted me, a smell I’d once found mundane, even a little stifling. Now, it was a symphony, a comforting embrace. The classroom buzzed with the usual afternoon energy – the scrape of chairs, the murmur of hushed conversations, the occasional triumphant shout of a child proud of their work. But for me, everything had shifted. The world outside the window, the one I’d so desperately wanted to return to, was no longer just a backdrop; it was the canvas upon which my adventure had been painted.
Mrs. Davison, bless her gentle soul, was already handing out sheets of thick, creamy paper. “Alright class,” she announced, her voice warm and steady, “today we’re going to draw our favourite place. It could be somewhere you’ve been, or somewhere you’ve only dreamed of. Let your imaginations run wild!”
My heart gave a little flutter, a tiny echo of the wonder and terror I’d experienced. My favourite place. The words felt too small, too ordinary for what I’d seen, what I’d lived. I took a deep breath, the air in the classroom suddenly feeling richer, more vibrant. My fingers, still tingling with the phantom touch of the Lumina’s silken fur, itched for a pencil, a crayon, anything to capture the essence of the land that now resided not just in my mind, but in my very bones.
