The Ticklish Guardian

Bert finally locates the Giggleberry Bush, but it's guarded by a surprisingly agile giant spider. The spider is fiercely protective, but Bert discovers its one weakness: an extreme ticklishness that can be exploited for his quest.

Bert’s paws, usually a source of mild embarrassment and occasional sprained ankles, felt as heavy as anvils as he trudged deeper into the Whispering Woods. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles, did little to lift his spirits. He clutched the worn map, a haphazard collection of scribbles and smudges provided by the perpetually bored Sarcastic Squirrel, as if it were a lifeline. The squirrel, whose name was apparently Squeaky, though Bert suspected it was more of a self-appointed title, had pointed a dismissive paw in the general direction of a “sparkly, jiggly bit” and then promptly scampered up the nearest oak, muttering something about the futility of helping creatures with a natural talent for self-sabotage.

The fireflies, a shimmering cloud of misguided enthusiasm, flitted around Bert’s ears, their tiny lights blinking in a chaotic rhythm. “This way, Bert!” buzzed one, darting left. “No, no, *this* way!” chirped another, zipping right. Bert tried to keep his focus, his gaze fixed on the blurry drawing of what was supposed to be the Giggleberry Bush. It looked less like a plant and more like a particularly enthusiastic explosion of confetti.

“Are you sure about this, Squeaky?” Bert asked, his voice a low rumble. Squeaky, perched on a branch above, flicked his tail. “As sure as a badger is grumpy and a firefly is forgetful. Which, considering your track record, is probably not very sure at all.”
