The wind howled like a banshee through the jagged peaks, whipping Masroor’s cloak around him as he clung to the narrow ledge. Below, a dizzying chasm dropped away into mist, and above, the sheer rock face offered little purchase. Each gust threatened to tear him from his precarious perch, and the biting cold seeped through his worn clothes, numbing his fingers and toes. He pressed on, the image of Lyra’s pale, feverish face a constant spur in his heart. The artifact, the Serpent’s Eye, was his only hope, and this treacherous mountain pass, the Serpent’s Lair, was the only path to it.

Elara’s words echoed in his mind, a calming balm against the rising panic. *“Fear is a serpent, Masroor. It coils around the heart, constricting the breath. Do not let it bite.”* He took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to channel the quiet strength Elara had helped him find. He focused on the feel of the rough stone beneath his fingertips, the steady rhythm of his own heartbeat. He was not the timid orphan anymore; he was Masroor, the one who would save his village.

A grating sound, like stones being dragged across rock, broke the desolate symphony of the wind. Masroor froze, his senses on high alert. The sound came again, closer this time, accompanied by a low, guttural hiss that seemed to vibrate through the very mountain. He strained his eyes, peering into the swirling mist ahead. Two malevolent emerald eyes, larger than any he had ever seen, blinked open in the gloom.
