The air in the grand hall hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from centuries of dust and unspoken desires. Elara stood at the threshold, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, each beat a desperate plea for escape. But escape was a phantom, a cruel illusion in this labyrinth of stone and shadow. He waited for her, not in the opulent chambers he’d shown her, but here, in the heart of the castle, where the moonlight, fractured by stained-glass windows depicting forgotten gods and grim battles, cast ethereal patterns on the flagstone floor.
He was a silhouette against the gloom, a figure carved from the deepest night. Lord Valerius. The name itself was a caress and a curse, a melody that both soothed and terrified her. She had come to know him, in a way. His brooding gaze that seemed to strip her bare, the low rumble of his voice that vibrated through her very bones, the possessive way his eyes lingered on her. He was a riddle wrapped in an enigma, a stranger who knew her secrets, a captor who claimed to protect her.
“You came,” he said, his voice a silken thread pulled taut. It wasn’t a question, but a statement of fact, born of an absolute certainty that bordered on arrogance.
