The air in Braiden’s truck still smelled faintly of lake water and the stale sweetness of the energy drinks we’d shared on those long drives. It was a scent that had become as familiar to me as the worn leather of my saddle, a comforting, earthy aroma that grounded me. The irony, of course, was that our own meticulously crafted plans had crumbled around us, taking our own relationship with them, and leaving Shania and Braiden adrift as well.
