Chapter 20
The Final Flame
Looking back, I understand that love isn't always the path you expect. My story with Caiden was a lesson, but my future with Braiden felt like a promise. A stable, true love had finally found its flame.
The dust motes danced in the late afternoon sunbeams slanting through the barn door, painting golden stripes across the worn wooden floor. I leaned against the cool, rough-hewn timber, the scent of hay and horse sweat a familiar comfort. It was moments like these, quiet and steeped in the rhythm of the ranch, that allowed my mind to wander, to sift through the tangled threads of the past three years. Caiden. His name still held a certain echo, a phantom warmth that could, on a lonely evening, still make my heart ache a little. And then there was Braiden. Steady, quiet Braiden, who was more like the earth beneath my feet. He was Caiden’s shadow, his best friend, the one who was always there, a silent anchor in the churning waters of my life. He’d watched our drama unfold with a quiet understanding, his gaze often holding a hint of something I hadn’t quite deciphered back then. He was the one who’d helped me rope calves, who’d sat with me on the porch swing after a particularly rough patch with Caiden, offering a patient ear and a comfortable silence.
