The dust swirled behind my pickup truck, a familiar gold haze against the setting sun as I bounced along the gravel road. It wasn't the smooth asphalt of town, the kind that whispered promises of convenience and easy miles. This was the country road, the kind that knew the rhythm of my heart, the kind that felt like home. And beside me, humming softly to the classic country station, was Braiden.

It felt strange, yet so undeniably right, to have him there. For so long, the passenger seat had been Caiden’s, filled with the nervous energy of our on-again, off-again dance. My annual competition, the one I’d been training for all spring. It was more than just a race; it was a piece of me, a part of my identity that Caiden had always seemed to tolerate rather than truly appreciate. Braiden, on the other hand, had been there at every practice, his eyes following my mare, Midnight, with an intensity that made my heart do a little two-step.
