Chapter 18
Confrontation at the Crossroads
Carter faces a direct confrontation with the elder or captain. He must use his wits and newfound courage to navigate the perilous situation.
The air in the scholar’s small, cluttered study crackled with a tension that had nothing to do with the flickering candlelight or the dusty tomes lining the walls. He’d explained the rudimentary workings of the time-travel device – a marvel of grandfather’s ingenuity, he’d called it, though Carter now suspected it was more of a dangerous gamble. He’d also warned Carter about the dangers of drawing too much attention, of the fear and suspicion that a stranger from elsewhere would inevitably inspire.
