Chapter 14
The Guard Captain's Pursuit
The Guard Captain, tasked by the elder, relentlessly pursues Carter, seeing him as a threat to the established order and safety of the village.
The old scholar’s words, though kind, had settled a new kind of unease in Carter’s stomach. “A ripple, my boy, a disturbance in the fabric of existence.” He’d spoken of anomalies, of things that defied the natural order, and Carter knew, with a chilling certainty, that he was that anomaly. His grandfather’s attic, a place of dusty wonders and forgotten dreams, had become a gateway to a world that was both terrifyingly real and impossibly alien. And now, the very forces that sought to understand and control the natural order were focused on him.
He’d seen the glint of steel, the grim set of faces, the way eyes narrowed with suspicion as he’d scurried through the shadowed alleyways. They knew he was different. They could smell it on him, he was sure of it – the scent of a world that hadn’t yet learned to fear the unknown, a world that clung to its traditions like a drowning man to driftwood. And at the heart of that suspicion was the Guard Captain. Carter had caught glimpses of him too, a man of imposing stature, his armor a dull, formidable gleam, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through the cloaks of deception. The Captain, he understood, was the village’s shield, its unwavering guardian, and Carter, with his strange clothes and even stranger mannerisms, was a crack in that shield.
The scholar’s small, cluttered room had offered a brief respite, a haven of quiet contemplation. But the scholar, Elias, had been right. Staying hidden forever was not an option. The device, his only hope of returning home, was still a mystery, its inner workings a puzzle he couldn’t solve. He’d spent hours poring over the worn leather journal his grandfather had left behind, deciphering cryptic notes and faded diagrams. But the language was often obscure, filled with a peculiar blend of scientific jargon and almost poetic musings. He’d managed to identify a few key components, to understand that the device harnessed something akin to ‘etheric currents,’ but the practical application, the how-to of returning to his own time, remained frustratingly out of reach.
