Ingenuity and Salvage

Alex’s gaze swept over the alien vessel, a skeletal behemoth half-buried in the ochre dust. It was a wreck, undeniably, but a wreck that hummed with the ghost of purpose. The ‘Stardust Wanderer,’ their own ship, was little more than a mangled carcass, its systems fried, its hull breached beyond repair. This alien craft, however, offered a sliver of hope, a chance to bridge the impossible gulf between this desolate planet and the distant stars.

“Astro-AI, run diagnostics on the primary power conduit,” Alex commanded, their voice raspy from disuse and the dry, alien air.

“Processing,” the AI’s synthesized voice responded, calm and devoid of the frantic energy that pulsed through Alex. “External hull integrity compromised by 67%. Internal atmosphere stable within salvaged environmental suit. Life support functions at 18% capacity.”
