The metallic shriek of tearing hull plating was the last sound Alex registered before the black. Then, a jarring thud, a symphony of groans from the ship’s dying frame, and silence. A profound, suffocating silence that pressed in on Alex’s ears, a stark contrast to the cacophony of the asteroid storm that had so violently rearranged their existence. Alex hung suspended in the pilot’s seat, the restraints digging into their shoulders, the acrid smell of burnt circuits stinging their nostrils. The emergency lights flickered weakly, casting long, dancing shadows across the mangled cockpit.

“Astro-AI, status report,” Alex rasped, their voice a dry croak.

A moment of static, then the familiar, synthesized voice, devoid of panic, responded. “Life support systems nominal. Hull integrity compromised. Primary propulsion offline. Navigation systems… unresponsive.”
