Chapter 12
A Glimmer of Light
During a particularly dangerous encounter with aggressive flora, Alex sees fleeting, ethereal lights in the distance. Strange resonant sounds fill the air, hinting at the Lumina Beings.
The air on Xylos was thick, a humid embrace that clung to Alex’s skin like a second, clammy suit. Every breath was a struggle against the cloying scent of alien decay and the sweet, cloying perfume of blossoms that promised both nectar and oblivion. Today, the latter seemed to be winning. The Xylos Flora, a sprawling, interconnected network of bio-luminescent tendrils and spore-spewing pods, had decided Alex was a particularly ripe specimen for… something. Alex didn't want to know what.

Astro-AI’s synthesized voice, usually a calm beacon in the chaos, crackled through Alex’s comms, tinged with an almost imperceptible tremor of… concern? “Warning: Proximity alert. Aggressive bio-matter detected. Recommend immediate evasive maneuver.”
“You think?” Alex muttered, dodging another lashing vine. The thorns scraped against Alex’s environmental suit, leaving thin, glowing scratches that pulsed with an eerie green light. This wasn't just defensive; it felt personal. The entire grove seemed to awaken, a symphony of rustling leaves, snapping twigs, and a low, guttural hum that vibrated in Alex’s bones. The air grew heavy, laden with a fine, shimmering dust that Alex’s suit filters struggled to contain.
