The air in the small, cluttered study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something akin to dried lavender. Dust motes, caught in the single shaft of sunlight piercing the gloom, danced like miniature fairies. I, Tom, felt a familiar tremor of nervousness, a feeling I usually reserved for balancing on my hind legs atop a precarious stack of barrels. But this was different. This was the kind of nervousness that buzzed under my fur, the kind that whispered of things far bigger than the sawdust and sequins of the circus.
Professor Hoot, perched on a towering stack of leather-bound tomes, adjusted his spectacles with a claw. His eyes, large and amber, seemed to hold the wisdom of centuries. He hooted softly, a sound that was more a thoughtful murmur than a bird’s call. “Ah, yes. The invitation. Most intriguing. Most… portentous.”
I shuffled my paws, trying to appear more confident than I felt. “It was real, then? The parchment?”
