The air thinned with every upward step, biting at my fur and stealing my breath. The Whispering Peaks, Professor Hoot had called them, and even the name sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the encroaching cold. Below, the familiar, comforting chaos of the circus was a distant memory, a patchwork quilt of canvas and light swallowed by the rugged landscape. Above, the jagged silhouette of the Shadow's Lair loomed, a dark promise against a sky bruised with twilight.

"Hold on tight, Tom!" Sparkle’s voice, usually a bright chime, was strained against the gale. She flitted beside me, her wings beating furiously, a tiny beacon of emerald light against the deepening gloom. Even her vibrant glow seemed to struggle against the oppressive atmosphere of these mountains.

Grumble, bless his massive, furry heart, moved with a surprising agility for his size, his heavy paws finding purchase on the slick, ice-crusted rocks. He grunted, a low rumble of effort, as a particularly vicious gust tried to tear me from my footing. "Steady, bear! These winds are more than just air, they're trying to push us back, to make us doubt."
