The attic air hung thick and still, a forgotten breath caught in the eaves. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating Elara’s solitary figure as she knelt before the ancient wooden chest. Her fingers, usually so nimble with yarn, trembled slightly as she lifted the heavy lid. A faint scent of lavender and aged paper wafted out, a ghost of a time long past.

Inside, nestled amongst moth-eaten linens and brittle photographs, lay a treasure trove of forgotten memories. Faded letters, tied with ribbon the color of dried roses, spilled out. Their edges were softened by time, the ink a delicate sepia smudge. But it was the object beneath them that truly captured Elara’s attention. A half-finished shawl, knitted from wool the color of a twilight sky, lay draped over a stack of yellowed newspapers.

With a gentle touch, Elara lifted the shawl. The wool was surprisingly soft, still retaining a whisper of its former warmth. As her eyes traced the intricate pattern, a chill snaked down her spine. It was a pattern she recognized, not from any book or design she’d ever studied, but from the very fabric of the unsettling events plaguing her village. The twisted cables mirrored the tangled branches that had appeared overnight in the Elder’s garden, the bobbles seemed to echo the strange, luminous orbs that had flickered in the woods, and the open-work lace… it was uncannily like the swirling mists that had enveloped the village square, making familiar paths seem alien and disorienting.
