Elara’s cottage, usually a haven of quiet industry, now hummed with a different kind of energy. The air, thick with the scent of drying herbs and lanolin, was also charged with anticipation. Lyra sat across from her, her usual effervescence dimmed, her eyes wide and uncertain as she twisted a loose thread on her apron. The small, intricately woven square Elara had placed on the table between them seemed to absorb the tension, its complex pattern a silent testament to the unfolding mystery.
“I… I don’t know why I held onto it for so long,” Lyra confessed, her voice barely a whisper. Her gaze flicked from the woven square to Elara’s face, searching for reassurance. “It seemed so… childish. Like a dream I’d had after eating too many gooseberries.”
Elara’s fingers, still dusted with wool fibres, rested on the table. She met Lyra’s gaze with a gentle, encouraging nod. “Sometimes, Lyra,” she said softly, her voice like the low hum of her spinning wheel, “the things we dismiss as dreams hold the most truth. Especially when they feel real.”
