Master Silas confesses to Elara that he knew about the 'Weavers' and her grandmother. He reveals a past event where the village council suppressed a difficult truth to maintain peace.
The air in Master Silas’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and dried herbs, a comforting aroma that usually settled Elara’s nerves. Today, however, it felt heavy, like a shroud. She sat opposite the village elder, her knitting needles resting idle in her lap, the half-finished shawl a silent witness to the tension coiling in her stomach. The storm that had been brewing outside for days had finally broken, its fury mirroring the tempest within the small, crowded room.
Master Silas cleared his throat, a sound like pebbles skittering over a dry riverbed. His eyes, usually twinkling with the wisdom of ages, were clouded with a profound sadness. He had summoned her, his voice grave over the crackling phone line, and Elara had come, a sense of foreboding clinging to her like the damp wool of her favourite sweater.
“Elara,” he began, his voice raspy. “There are things I have kept from you. Things I have kept from all of us, for a very long time.” He gestured to a worn wooden chest tucked away in a shadowed corner. “My father, and his father before him, they were keepers of the village’s memory. And some memories… some are too heavy to bear.”
