The flickering torchlight cast dancing shadows on the rough-hewn walls of Grak’s dwelling, painting the ancient orc in hues of amber and deep umber. Aris, hunched over a collection of brittle scrolls that crackled with age, felt a familiar prickle of excitement mixed with trepidation. He’d spent the better part of the day with Grak, piecing together fragments of orcish lore, and each revelation felt like unearthing a buried treasure. But today, a different kind of discovery had unsettled him.
Earlier, while exploring a secluded alcove near the orcish settlement, Aris had stumbled upon a hidden cache of human artifacts. Not the simple tools of traders or the sturdy equipment of explorers, but something far more sinister. There were metallic restraints, strange devices that hummed with a faint, unsettling energy, and crude drawings depicting orcs bound and silenced. A chill, colder than any mountain wind, snaked down his spine. He’d recognized the insignia etched into a tarnished buckle – the mark of Commander Valerius.
He looked up from the scrolls, his brow furrowed. "Grak," he began, his voice hushed, "I… I found something today. Something that doesn't belong here."
