The air in the valley hummed with a different kind of quiet than Aris had grown accustomed to. It wasn't the oppressive silence of fear he'd half-expected, but a soft, rustling peace, like leaves whispering secrets to the wind. He sat by the edge of the camp, sketching in his worn notebook, the rough charcoal feeling familiar and grounding in his calloused fingers. Grak had told him that the orcs called this time of day "the breath between sun and moon," a moment for reflection before the stars took their full reign.

Across the flickering firelight, a small figure was practicing. It was Lyra, her broad shoulders hunched slightly, her green skin catching the fire’s glow. She was attempting to mimic the sounds of a bird Aris had described earlier, a small, chirping creature he’d seen flitting through the ancient trees. Her attempts were earnest, a series of guttural clicks and soft whistles that were far from the bird's delicate song, but there was a spark of something in her efforts that made Aris smile.

He remembered his first true conversation with her. It had been a few days after his arrival, a hesitant exchange near the bubbling stream where the orcs gathered water. He’d been trying to decipher the intricate patterns carved into a smooth river stone, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra, who had been observing him from a distance, had finally approached, her large, intelligent eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and caution.
